Many of you are out there doing Spring Clean Ups on existing or new jobs at this time, but it's also the time of year when the phones start ringing off the hook for new work. The most important part of any job is estimating. Many companies don't get the job due to over bidding or lose money because they under bid. By taking the time to estimate your jobs correctly you can affordably price jobs for your clients and still make money.

  • Take accurate measurements of any and all areas.
  • Get a landscape design if necessary for the job. This keeps everyone on the same page & makes it a lot easier to estimate your job correctly.
  • Figure out all the materials & equipment needed for the job.
  • Add on your labor costs & any overhead.

Using a landscape estimate template can keep you on track so you don't miss anything on your job. There are lots available like the one shown online for free or for a minimal fee that you can edit to your own needs.

Just because the weather is colder doesn't mean you have to pack up shop & stop working! This is still a good time to get out there & look at jobs for next spring! As Landscape Contractors & Designers we need to educate our customers that this is still a good time to look at their job site & get a design done. That way they have a little time to look at their budget, think about what phase of the job they may want done & get back to you to get on your schedule in a timely manner. We all have had the clients that call at the beginning of May that want a design & the work done by Memorial Day. It's just getting your clients to think a little differently. Everybody will be happier in the end!
